A new era of electric motorcycle racing is becoming a reality with the FIM Moto-e World Cup in 2019. Dorna, the commercial rights holder to races, has announced the bikes for will be supplied by Italian e-bike manufacturer Energica Motor Company, with the tires supplied by Michelin. The Cup was attempted in 2013, but the last two races had to be cancelled as suitable venues were unavailable in the necessary time and no world final was held.
The bike model that will be used is the Energica EGO, the worlds first street-legal e-bike, which features a custom RMS PM Family motor drive. The bike features a top speed of 150 mph (240kph), and can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3 seconds. It does not have a gearbox or clutch, instead using a ride-by-wire system allowing the driver to control the acceleration torque of the motor, and use regenerative torque or engine breaking for deceleration.
